It’s tranquil yet terrifying standing on the top edge of a volcano but this sees to be exactly where Ryan belongs. With the explosiveness of a raging volcano and the cool composition of evening mountain air, Ryan Rostrom is becoming recognized internationally as the next big thing in music: the new generation guitar hero.

The guitar hero. For decades they dominated the music scene with solos and riffs that defined pop culture. Each brought their own style but they all had one thing in common: they inspired us with the sound of their axe. After decades of fizzling out of mainstream music, fans are eager to have them back. But where do you find one? Who will answer the call?

Working from a music studio and currently producing his second album, Ryan is already starting to explode onto the international scene. Having already performed with over 50 different singers across 4 continents, Ryan knows what it takes to succeed. Since starting his solo project three years ago, he has already won numerous awards and recognitions and has performed for tens of thousands of people.

After going through some massages and aromatherapy, he prescribed me with a bonsai headband to wear at night to increase blood flow to the brain. It actually helped quite a bit.
In July of 2014, a group of guys came together to form a band. It was just something they were going to do for fun, outside of work and school. However, these guys soon realized that their band could be so much more than just a hobby. After only two and a half years, this band called Foreign Figures has just finished a national tour and is getting ready to record their second album.

Manager and Creative Director, Lance Lowry describes Foreign Figures as the musical baby of Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, and One Republic— all very unique and iconic bands. It is possible that Foreign Figures could be the next Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, or One Republic. Their passion and dedication to their music surpasses all expectations, and they have a clear vision for their future. “Our dream is to play on the freakin’ moon!” says Eric Michaels, lead vocalist. These young men have literally set the stars and sky as their limit. “We’re always going to be evolving,” says Eric. They are always looking for new ways to write or different sounds they can add to their music. That is going to be a huge part of their new EP that will be released in 2017. All of the guys want to focus on world sounds by using subtle influences, like the African drums in “Come Alive,” or the Japanese influence on “Paradigm.” Seth Dunshee, lead bassist talks about how these aren’t typical “rock band” instruments, but Foreign Figures doesn’t want to be a typical rock band. They want to write more songs besides the ones that could be featured on the radio or licensed for a film. “We want to be able to write whatever comes into our heads,” says Seth.

The biggest driving force behind their music is being able to connect to their audience. Each member of the band talks about how much the dedication of their fans means to them. “We want to do what our favorite bands have done for us,” Seth explains. Eric adds that he wants their songs to become the fans’ songs; he hopes that his lyrics will help listeners feel understood and that there is someone who recognizes their struggles. “Everyone has their own demons,” he says, “I’ve been helped most in my life through music,” and so Eric wants his music to be able to do the same for as many people who will listen. Lead guitarist, Jonny Tanner, says that he and the band will try to ask themselves, “am I loving my audience?” and, “am I showing the audience how much I care about them?” Steve Michaels, Eric’s brother and drummer for Foreign Figures, describes a recent experience that he had with a fan: “She approached us and said that she listens to music in her room a lot and writes down the names of the songs she likes the most. She told us, with tears in her eyes, that our music touched her heart and impacted her more than any other music she has ever heard before. She said it with so much sincerity and passion and you could feel how much she meant it.” The band members are all overwhelmed at the amount of people they have reached in Provo. Each of them talk about how they used to beg their friends and family to come see their concerts, but now all they have to do is post on social media to sell out a venue.

One of their most recent shows was in front of more than 10,000 people at Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City where they opened for Lukas Graham. This year they have also had the chance to share the stage with American Authors and X-Ambassadors. Foreign Figures has been lucky enough to have most of these opportunities come knocking on their door, but they know that won’t happen forever. One of their biggest goals for 2017 is to connect with more people in the industry so they can continue to build their fan base and reach people with their music. They would love to have the opportunity to open for more bands as well as collaborate. Seth says that they would also be very interested in commissioning songs for movies or T.V. He thinks it would be a great way to develop their song writing skills as a band, and Lance points out that Foreign Figures is also a “one-stop shop” since they write, record, and produce all of their music themselves.

Foreign Figures is a completely independent band. They are lucky enough to have a guitarist that is also an audio engineer. Seth brags that Jonny is likely the best audio engineer in Utah, and Lance calls him a genius and “Jack of all trades.” Jonny has been a studio engineer for six years, and he was the one who mixed and mastered Foreign Figures’ debut album, Paradigm. Every single member of their team brings a different skill or talent to their business. Jonny and Seth both compare Foreign Figures to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because of the unique mindset each band member brings to the table. Steve says that the business side of the band is really invigorating, and he really likes being in charge of things like booking. Seth is really awesome at the social media side of things, so he is able to bounce ideas off of Lance, who is in charge of branding. The band members all mention how Lance has been a great addition to the team because he is able to direct their creativity.

Lance Lowry is an entrepreneur who started his own video production company. He has known Eric and Steve since high school, but first got involved in working with Foreign Figures by helping them produce two of their music videos. Eventually, the band convinced Lance to manage them and he has been a part of the team since June. Lance’s knowledge of business and entrepreneurship has been a huge asset to Foreign Figures. He calls the guys “artrepreneurs” because they are artists who are turning their art and creativity into a business. The entire band is also very grateful for Lance’s networking skills; he speaks to people at the shows, makes connections, and gathers feedback so the band can focus on putting on a great show.

Their live show is what Foreign Figures prides themselves in the most. Lance is very confident in the show that the band puts on. “We know that when people see the live show they’ll be converted,” he says. The band has been very focused on branding themselves as a live act. At their last concert in Orem, they took a huge amount of live footage that they are going to use to produce live videos. Seth talks about how the live concert is where the band members take a lot more liberties with the songs than they have written— Jonny even plays different solos than the recorded ones on the album. Eric describes the live show as a rollercoaster. There are quiet, intimate moments with Eric at the piano, and then the next minute they are playing an upbeat radio song. He talks about how he and the other band members are all over the place. “I feel like I have a different side that comes out on stage,” Eric says. The entire band is very proud of their stage presence. Each of the four guys used to be the front man of his own band. Because of this, they each have their own captivating energy that they bring to their concerts. Lance says that another cool thing is that every member of the band is someone’s favorite; you can hear each of their names being chanted from the crowd at a live show.

Eric, the lead singer grew up being classically trained on the piano. His mom was also a fan of the Carpenters and Nat King Cole, who influence his more soulful side. Eric’s dad was a rocker and introduced him to Journey, who really inspires him as well. The first time he remembers feeling music on an emotional level, however, is when he was watching a movie and the song “Clocks,” by Coldplay started playing. Eric describes how he felt something magical come over him, and he immediately went home to look up the song and learn it. Soon after, Eric became interested in singing, so he started taking voice lessons. As he started performing, he received such a warm welcome from his audiences, which motivated him to keep pursuing music. He said that he never really thought about music as a professional career while he was growing up, but it kept calling to him.

Steve and Eric did everything together growing up. His fondest memories are of training for the wrestling team with both of his brothers. Steve is amazed at the hard work Eric has done to get to this point in his career. “I will tell you,” he says, “Eric didn’t become as good as he is by natural talent or luck, this kid worked harder than anyone else to earn it. I like to call him ‘the machine.’ When he puts his mind to something, he never stops!” Steve also started learning music at a young age. He remembers how he would really connect with the beat and rhythm of the music he listened to. When he was eleven, he started learning how to play the drums. Neil Peart really inspired him to take his drumming to the next level, so Steve continued his drum career alongside guitarist Jake Workman while they were in high school. Steve was also the lead singer of that band, so he was able to develop more of his musical abilities.

Seth Dunshee, the bassist for Foreign Figures, is also amazingly talented. He first started playing in bands because he wanted to be a cool rock star, but he realized that he had a knack for the guitar once he started playing. Seth never took formal lessons, and taught himself the notes and the chords on the guitar. Then, when the original bassist of Foreign Figures left the band, Seth stepped in and learned the bass. He says he is so much more comfortable playing the bass than he ever was playing guitar, and he would probably say no if the band asked him to play guitar again.

The guitar parts are left up to Jonny Tanner, or Jonny T. He actually started playing the guitar in jazz band when he was in middle school and high school, but he also grew up around classic rock bands like Journey and Boston. Those bands have influenced him quite a bit as well as The Edge from U2. Like The Edge, Jonny wants his guitar playing to support the lead vocalist and help the song shine rather than himself. Jonny also has a degree in audio engineering, so he is also the one who produces the band’s music. He recorded, edited, mixed, and mastered the entire Paradigm album; however, for the new album that Foreign Figures is working on, he will pass the editing and recording onto another engineer, and once the songs are cut, he will mix and master them.

The band is really excited for what the future has in store. They have been working very hard on their upcoming EP, and they are hoping to plan Spring, Summer, and Fall tours for 2017. “We’re not doing this because it’s convenient,” Seth says, “This is what we are going to be doing for the rest of our lives.” Eric adds, “We’re not rich, and I might never be rich but I am okay with that because it is all about the passion.”

If you want to collaborate with Foreign Figures, reach out through social media or email management@foreignfigures.com. If you want to see them live reach out at booking@foreignfigures.com and/or, watch for tour dates in your area by following them on Facebook, YouTube, twitter @4INFIGURES, or Instagram @foreignfiguresofficial. Their next show will be in Midway, UT at Midway Town Hall on February 3, 2017 from 8pm to 9pm.

Ten years ago, on an icy January morning, underneath a brilliant, clear, dark blue winter’s sky in Park City, Utah; Robyn Cage rocked the first cover of Scorpius Magazine’s inaugural print issue, as the crisp, glossy copies landed at local businesses throughout the famous ski town. The gorgeous, evocative songstress had just set Park City on fire as the hottest new singer/songwriter in town, as well as her own piano in her “Burning Now” music video, from her first album, “Born in the Desert”.

Since then, Robyn Cage has gone on to produce multiple albums, ep’s, and singles which have become celebrated by her fans, internationally. Cage has ascended to become one of the most hailed and beloved independent artists in the world.

Robyn Cage has even recently been touring with Brit Floyd and writing a new musical, “Black Friday,” which she’s hoping to produce in New York City soon.

However, despite her success, Robyn has always stayed true to Park City, the ski-town that gave her her first breaks. She even still performs regularly at Prime Steak House on main street, in Park City., Utah.

Scorpius Magazine had the great privilege and thrill of a ten-year reunion with Robyn Cage in an epic interview with the fiery, unchained, red-haired songstress.

Scorpius: If you could travel back ten years to your first interview with Scorpius Magazine for a moment and recall where you were at as an artist and in your personal life, what could you tell us?

Cage: That was a time of intense artistic discovery for me. I was figuring out who I wanted to be as an artist, what I wanted to say and how to say it. It was an exciting time, mostly thanks to the incredible artists I met around then who I began collaborating with, and still work with to this day.

Scorpius: Now, 10- years later, after conquering Park City and the rest of the world as one of the most original and celebrated artists on the international music scene, what could you tell us about the moment you’re in today?

Cage: Well, I can’t say that I feel like I’ve conquered the world! I’m currently moving into a new phase of my career. I’ve been writing a musical for the past several years, and I’ve loved that process so much and I’m hoping to write many more musicals.

Scorpius: What could you tell us about the origins and inspiration behind each of your albums, ep’s and singles you’ve released over the last 10 years, beginning with your first album, “Born in the Desert”?

Cage: Born In The Desert really centered around self-exploration and self-expression. I was experimenting with different sounds, themes, genres, vocal techniques… finding what made me unique and how it all fit together. Slow The Devil was a reaction to the huge changes in my community, my country, and the world at large. Each song was a personal story, but also a microcosm for something much bigger. A Million Years of Stone was my divorce album, exploring themes of life, death, endings, beginnings and personal freedom. Lovers and Monsters was an acoustic collection of waltzes, and each song was a different kind of love story.

Scorpius: You’ve shot some epic music videos as an independent artist, are there any memorable experiences, that you can recall, during the filming of the videos that stand out to you as memorable or humorous?

Cage: For Burning Now, I wanted to set fire to a piano for the final scene, but right as we were getting ready to shoot, it started to rain. We had trouble getting the wet piano to light, so we drenched it with lighter fluid. It suddenly became an enormous bonfire, and fortunately the wind was blowing away from me. If the wind had changed direction, I don’t know if I’d be here today.

Scorpius: Is there a particular song/s that you’ve written that have a haunting or unforgettable back-story?

Cage: Slow The Devil came to me in a dream. I woke up with the full song in my head.

Scorpius: Is there a singular driving force behind your life as an artist or a fire that burns within your soul that you could attribute to your inspiration and success?

Cage: The need for self-expression has always been the thing that drives me.

Scorpius: Of all the live shows you’ve performed, is there any particular experience that made a powerful, meaningful impact on you in your career as a live artist?

Cage: I headlined a concert at the Deer Valley Amphitheater, and for the final song, “Theatre Noir” a bunch of kids ran up to the stage and danced. It was such a beautiful moment of shared joy and celebrating our differences, and I’ll never forget it.

Scorpius: If you had to use just one word to describe the last ten years of your career as an independent artist, what would it be and why?

Cage: Searching. I still feel like I’m searching- for myself, for answers, and for the meaning of life. It’s like putting together pieces of an impossibly intricate puzzle.

Scorpius: What can you tell us about your new musical, “Black Friday”?

Cage: BLACK FRIDAY is a satirical dark comedy, with music inspired by “A Nightmare Before Christmas” and the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” BLACK FRIDAY isn’t like any musical you’ve ever seen. An interactive & immersive experience, this is new theatrical experience for adventurous audiences. With hook-laden alt/pop songwriting, BLACK FRIDAY’s creators draw on influences as wide-ranging as Depeche Mode and Michael Jackson, all the way to Little Shop of Horrors.

WARNING: This show contains adult language, sexual content, nudity, violence, and drug use… All the fun stuff.

Synopsis:
It’s Black Friday at your local Costco, or “ShopMo,” when a global apocalypse forces all shoppers to quarantine. A psychopathic pageant queen, a conspiracy theorist, an environmentalist influencer, a doctor, a marine, and a drunken stay-at-home dad take refuge from Online Shopping Zombies or “Cyber Zoms.”

Amidst power struggles and budding romances, these monstrously talented shoppers sing and dance their way through the Shopocalypse. However, tensions rise as supplies dwindle, until their only hope for survival is to escape to the American Dream Mall.

When our very existence is threatened, can we join together and learn from past mistakes? Can we forego instant gratification to preserve the future?
Or will we just go shopping?

Scorpius: What projects, albums, singles, tours are you currently involved in that you can share with Scorpius?

Cage: I’ll be touring the US and Canada with Brit Floyd again this year from April-June, and I’m developing a musical called BLACK FRIDAY, which I’m hoping to bring to NYC.

Nino Shonia’s enigmatic, animated spirit and subtle charm originate from her childhood in Tsalenjikha. Located in the beautiful region of Smegrelo, Georgia, it’s a place where traditions are held sacred. Since childhood, amidst the wine-drenched social landscape of a small town, Nino viewed the world through a rare lens of poignant truth and innocence growing up under the rule of a communist government (Soviet Union at the time). Nino’s love of books transported her to other worlds and inspired her appreciation for the intrinsic values of the human existence. “The word freedom, as I remember it, was completely out of use. I mean human freedom, freedom of choice, not the freedom of the country from the Soviet Union,” says Nino.

Nino’s love of visual art and the cinema began at the age of 8-years old. “My mother was working as a cashier in the only movie theater in town. It didn’t matter what the weather was like, what the movie was about, whether it was a Soviet movie or a foreign one; every day, after school, I would quickly finish my homework, have lunch, and visit the cinema in the evenings. I cannot say that I realized, at that time, that I would eventually tell stories in this medium someday,” says Nino.

After entering the university at the Faculty of Journalism at Ivane Javakhishvili State University, Nino began a prolific career working in newspapers, magazines, and TV Channels including: Georgian Central TV, Imedi TV, Playboy magazine, and radio stations (as a DJ and organizer of various concerts. “I always helped new musicians and well-known groups to record albums, arrange shows, and find necessary funds. That is why my house was a gathering place for musicians, writers, theater directors, and other artists.” Says Nino.

As a journalist in her twenties, Nino realized her gift to tell stories, visually. “I began to notice that every story I wrote was extremely saturated with the aesthetics of framing. I always wanted there to be more visualization in it. Everyone knew that my master’s final work (Journalism and Media management) would be film. Finally, completely alone, loaded with equipment and without funds, I went to Berlin and made my first documentary about Georgians in Berlin, “Migrant Birds,” (2005) says Nino. Eventually, she went on to produce four more documentary films including: “Selling Surrogates: wombs for hire in Georgia,” “At the Edge”, Chabukiani”, and “Opposites Can Attract.”

At age 35, Nino became pregnant with a daughter. “Nicole’s birth changed me completely. Along with the joy, I was afraid that I was no longer free and that I had to find a permanent job with a solid salary,” Nino says. This time in her life was followed by 9-years of arduous, uninspired work in the media industry until one night, during one of her cigarette breaks, Nino was reminded of her destiny. “I live in an Italian courtyard, where there is a common corridor. We gather there as neighbors and friends to share thoughts. My neighbor, Maiko, told me about the newly established Georgian-American Film Academy. She asked me a simple question, “What do you expect? Why are you not doing what you want most?” Suddenly, at that very moment, I decided not to compromise my desires and dreams any further. I would do only what I want with all my being. That’s how I got into the new academy. My dream was to make movies professionally, however, my daily work had kept me from fulfilling this dream. Although I was quite successful in my field, it was still not what I wanted for my life. I decided that I would never betray myself again. I’ve helped others to achieve their goals and now it’s time to do only what I love and “Lile,” was my first baby,” Says Nino.

Nino Shonia’s film “Lile,” won Best Short Film, Best Director of a Short Film, Best Actress of a Short Film, and Best Score of a Short Film, at Scorpiusfest 2023. Recently I had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing Nino Shonia.

Her unassuming, light-hearted nature would disarm you at first glance, from a distance. However, once you actually approach the petite-figured, golden haired Georgian from Tbilisi and engage her in conversation, her undeniably perceptive and sagacious presence is powerful.

Scorpius: What do you love most about your life in Georgia?

Nino Shonia: Georgia itself. Maybe that’s why I can’t leave. I love the people with their weaknesses but with extremely warm hearts that cover all kinds of mistakes. Sometimes it seems like we don’t succeed in solving our problems. Sometimes we are even enemies of our own country, and sometimes, after small successes, we take a few steps back and keep making the same mistakes. It’s sad, but I love the fact that since the beginning of the Ukraine-Russia war, a large number of citizens of a country that has been our greatest enemy, entered into our country and caused the Georgian nation to think. Almost one million Russian refugees entered the small Georgian nation, a population of just under 4 million. Russians escaped to a country of which 20% is already occupied by Russia. Despite this fact, Georgians’ haven’t turned their backs on their guests, nor closed their doors to the needy and lost. That’s why I love my people. Knowing Russia will use it against us, maybe it’s a big mistake. However, I love my kind-hearted people who still tolerate them and speak to them in Russian language to make life easier for those who are ashamed that they are Russians, who fled the war and were left homeless. It is a deeply rooted tradition of our country to elevate the guest to God. Georgia is the country of Vazha Pshavela, the greatest humanist poet, whose poem, “Guest-Host” develops the philosophy and theme of the guest’s inviolability. Its main character also ignores the blood-take-revenge tradition only because the murderer of many brothers in his village appears as an unexpected guest in his house but that day he is a “Guest” and not an enemy. He can’t kill the guest in his own home. It is a matter of his dignity and because of this, he also confronts the village.

My country has many such stories and even in everyday life, when I go outside, I come across interesting stories that could easily become the plot of a movie.

Scorpius: What were the three largest obstacles you were faced with when filming “Lile”?

Nino Shonia: I can’t recall many obstacles. Shooting “Lile” was more of a utopia. Every film begins with an idea and I had only this idea. No budget and no people to implement a budget. I had this dream and a great desire to make my first film and this great desire created opportunities as soon as I took action. Time was crucial, however, if I had more time from the moment I finished the script to the beginning of shooting, even one month, I would probably have sought financing. I had to shoot the film within the framework of the Georgian-American Academy which included a deadline so I didn’t complain about the lack of funding and we started shooting directly. The academy provided us with the latest equipment for filming, free of charge. I also had friends who invested a lot of energy in helping to make my dream a reality. We didn’t have a lot of resources nor big or small details that usually make cinema such an expensive product. It was finally decided that I should shoot the film in 1 day with people who possessed no filmmaking experience but who had a friendship, heart, an incredible work ethic, dedication, and a great love for cinema. Certain elements in the film; a tractor, the evacuator, costumes, decorations, and people…just appeared. N1 in Georgia, professional make-up and hair artist, Madonna Chanturia helped us free of charge. The people of the wonderful village of “Brotseula” made us feel at home the day of shooting. When I spoke to a group of elderly women regarding playing a role in the film, at first they didn’t take me serious, however, after convincing the ladies with no acting experience, they played the role of “elderly gossiping neighbors,” and did a remarkable job.

The music track of “Lile” has a special meaning for me. I knew exactly what I wanted. However, I ran into some issues regarding the original music I had chosen and I had to completely destroy the shots I had built on the “Liturgy” of the famous Georgian composer Gia Kancheli. After searching for an alternative solution through a sea of options on the internet, I finally found Kai Engel and Scott Buckley, who gave me the right to use their music in my film without cost, only on the condition that I credit them in the film.

Scorpius: If you were offered the opportunity and funding to film: “Lile” as a feature film, would you be interested?

Nino Shonia: I would want to rework the script for a feature and there would be a lot of preparatory work that would need to go into it. It would depend on the budget, locations, set design, costumes, and so forth. It would also depend on the crew I would work with, particularly the editor. In short, I would not do it hastily and I would certainly approach the new project with great ambition. Regarding “Lile,” the story has great potential to translate into a feature film. However, with a completely different dramatic approach and structure. I would use several layers in order to give it great dimensions; plot lines, subplots, and characters which intersect with turning points and an epic climax. If the offer was right, I would probably say yes. The story and the issues raised in the film are much deeper than the short film could cover. Every specific film creates its own rhythm and I think that “Lile” has found its rhythm. However, as a feature film it would still be different.

Scorpius: Do you see yourself casting Mariam Bitsadze in future projects?

Nino Shonia: Yes, and I see her finding big projects with other directors elsewhere as well. She’s suited for the cinema very well. She was born for a great future in cinema. She’s very beautiful, talented, and amazingly focused while working. Although Mariam is not an actress by profession, she understood Lile’s character exactly. She is a professional psychologist. She already saw Lile and understood her fate. As soon as the camera was on, she was becoming quiet, passive, and mysterious, just like Lile’s character would have been. I can’t imagine anyone else playing the role of Lile.

Scorpius: What are some of the most vital issues facing female filmmakers in the industry at this moment?

Nino Shonia: We live in a male-dominated world and it is not easy to dismantle the patriarchal system because it has been formed over centuries. Gender inequality is particularly noticeable in the film industry. The dearth of female directors is so noticeable that festivals have separate nominations. It is perceived as an encouraging action for women. However, in my opinion, putting men and women in an unequal situation again, in a certain sense, highlighting and facilitating this gender inequality. Because that alone doesn’t change anything in the industry, where men and women have different payment and opportunities. Society puts a woman in an extreme situation where she has to manage both her career and family well. At the same time, she must look good, control weight, dress… Because together with the profession, society will definitely consider and evaluate her appearance. It is a very far-reaching topic and it is difficult to summarize it all in one question.

Scorpius: Have you ever considered writing a biographical screenplay of your life?

Nino Shonia: No, and I probably will never write it. Although I keep a diary, I don’t wish to discuss my life in such detail. I don’t have the ambition nor the ego for that and it’s not important to me at this time. It’s much more interesting for me to observe other people’s lives and tell their stories.

Scorpius: If today was the last day of your life what last words would you leave the world with?

Nino Shonia: “It was good, but I wanted more…”

Everything about Nino Shonia’s life as an independent artist/filmmaker and the way she fights for her dream embodies the spirit of Scorpiusfest’s mission.

Nino’s story is an inspiration to every true, organic artist and filmmaker in the world.

It is with honor that we feature Nino Shonia on the cover of this year’s Scorpius Magazine – Scorpiusfest 2023 Issue.

With a unique and masterful touch unusual for his age and a subtle, mischievous charm, Anders Teig embodies the spirit of the Norwegian God, Loki. His recent work at least parallels the early work of Steven Spielberg. The Viking Filmmaker from Norway is making undeniable waves on the international film scene.

Recall one of the most memorable experiences form your childhood.

Once, two of my friends and I went into the woods carrying an air rifle. Of course, in Norway, weapons are not available everywhere, but air rifles were used for hobby shooting. So my friend had got hold of one and some bullets, and we were walking into woods in the mountain nearby where we lived. We walked for quite a while following a track under the power lines, as you might call it. When we got to one of the large steel masts. My friend decided he wanted to climb it. So my other friend and I are standing on the ground looking at the daredevil climbing to the top and sitting next to the power cables, inches from certain death. On the ground my other friend gave me the air rifle, and as I was checking it out. Suddenly, our friend at the top came screaming down. “It’s the cops, it’s the cops!” Apparently somebody had seen a group of boys carrying a rifle walking into the woods, and had alerted the police, and they sent a police helicopter. The helicopter was circling right above the massive steel mast my friend had just climbed, and as he was descending to the ground. I said to my friend standing next to me. “What if I shot them?” I put the rifle to my shoulder and pulled the trigger. The rifle went off. My friend had loaded the rifle without telling me. My heart stopped, I felt like I had my life sucked out of me. I was standing frozen on the ground until our climber hit the ground. “Run!” He shouted in my ear. We roamed downhill into the woods and hid in the mountain for hours before we hid the rifle and went home for a very late dinner. Luckily nothing ever came of it but I don’t think an air rifle bullet can do any harm to å police helicopter. However, every time I think of this I get the chills. It was not a pleasant experience, it was just being a 14 year old doing an extremely stupid thing.

You mentioned a place called “Blood Town” regarding your childhood in Bergen.

I grew up just outside a place called “Blood Town” which is on the shadowy part of the city due to the sun being hidden behind one of the seven mountains surrounding the city.

Blood Town got its name from a lot of red houses that were built in the early 30s to help people who were homeless or just socially unequal. It was the red color of the houses that gave name to the town. However, after the houses burned down and they were rebuilt and painted yellow, the area still bore the name Blood Town. There were a lot of people who were suffering from drug addiction and psychiatric patients living in the houses when I grew up. Every time we had to go to the larger

city beyond, we had to pass through Blood Town. Being young and in my teens it didn’t feel very safe. However, it shows Norway’s social democratic status; that the local council makes sure everybody gets housing, so even if it’s a bad name and the place had a shady reputation, it really is a great example of how Norway takes cares of their own.

What was college like before you dove into film?

I studied psychology at the University of Bergen in Norway. This is because I have always been interested in personalities, and the human psyche. If I want to make films, and write about human beings, then studying psychology should be second nature. I believe everyone who writes are interested in the human condition and that is what psychology studies. However it was also a lot about biological processes in the brain and the nervous system which was a bit more mathematical but having a year of Psychology at University level has helped me a lot in my writing.

You had the opportunity to work with Sir Ian McKellen. What was that experience like?

I went to film school at Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham, just south of London in the UK. I majored in screenwriting and Directing. This school is well known for the production based approach, and we made films on both digital and 16 mm film. One of the films we were making was a film about gay rights in Great Britain. A very talented filmmaker called Elliott Kerrigan had written a touching script. There were big parts in the shortfall. Voice over was part of the story, and we had not yet found out who could do this. So one day in the edit bay, Elliott said: “wouldn’t it be great if we had Sir Ian McKellen do the narration?”. Being young and blue eyed we all just went ahead with the idea, thinking it might happen. We found his email address and contacted him. Two days passed, and nothing. So we understood we were just foolish youngsters, we thought,”who were we to contact such a big star?” On the third day we got a reply. He was happy to read the voice over, and he recorded it on a soundstage somewhere in the world where he was filming. We were all just in awe. It really opened my eyes to not be too shy to ask even the biggest stars because they might happen to say yes. A good lesson for a young filmmaker.

“The Passenger” is such a remarkable film to be produced as your first offering. How did it come together?

Kristofer Hivju in The Passenger

My first professional short film was a script I had written a couple of years prior. It had been buried, untouched, in my “digital drawer”. It was written based on an of idea of Carl B. Elmore’s. Though I really liked it, I didn’t really push it before I got in contact with an editor named Audun Fylling. We got the production company DUO Film to take the film on and they got us funding from the local film council. We were casting for the main role and I really wanted Kristofer Hivju. He had just landed the role of Thormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones. We all thought the ship had sailed on him, but the experience with Sir Ian McKellen led us to ask and see if we could be so lucky to have him star in our film. As with Sir Ian McKellen, we got a positive response. It was a joy to work with such a classy actor. I learned a lot by working with him. Just the details in discussing of the character and the story was a joy. The film is about a lonely guy who picks up a blind hitchhiker just to have some company. Instead of driving him to his destination, he just drives around the city in circles. The film stars only two characters, Fredrik Hermansen and Kristofer Hivju gave some really great performances.

You won three awards at Scorpiusfest 2021 for Rubbish Robbers. You won Best Director, Sigurd Sele, Best Actor, and the film, Best Short Comedy Film. Where did your inspiration for the film originate?

While I was waiting to start the editing process for “The Passenger” I was feeling quite nervous. Did we get all the shots? Did we have a movie at all? I sat down and thought I would try to write a one-location action/comedy short. In my nervousness and eagerness to get the editing finished, I wrote the craziest shit I ever have written. It was so much blood and gore and it would cost at least $250,000 dollars to make for a 10 minutes short. So I did what any sane person would do. I put it away and thought, “This will never get made”. A couple of years later I was reading through some of my old stuff, and this script made me laugh. So I thought, I sent it to Linda Bolstad Strønen and Marie Fuglestein at DUO Film and they loved it. We were asking for funding, but it was insanely expensive. So I rewrote out the most gory and blood-filled stuff and we ended up with a much more doable script. We were ready to shoot but we had one more thing to get through; the casting of

the main character. I have always been a fan of one of Calle Hellevang-Larsen, one of Norway’s top comedians and I wrote the script specifically for him based on his persona. We contacted him, but he just was super busy and we had to postpone. I really could not make the film without him, since the film was written for him. Over a year later he found a hole in his schedule for us, and we got all the shots we needed in two days. Many times during the waiting process I doubted myself and if it was worth waiting. I always came to the conclusion that it was better to wait then to regret not waiting to get the best cast possible. It turned out not only Calle, but Sigurd Sele, Torgbny Anderaa, and Fredrik Hermansen came on board. It was the perfect cast in this dark comedy.

Mordir Actum – RØST?

This has been such a fun project. I was hired by Vigdis Nielsen to be one of two directors of the 2020s version of RØST, a workshop for young and up and coming filmmakers. The concept is to have youngsters,15-25 years old, who either have been to film school or just want to learn filmmaking to be part of a semi-professional shoot. There is a professional director, DOP, sound recordist on set and a professional editor and sound designer in post production. All the professionals have the roles of mentors for the youngsters, and we are running the set as if it is a professional set so the kids really learn what is expected on a film set.

You’re a published author and you own a publishing company?

In between my films I wrote a novel. It is a horror/crime story with supernatural elements set in Bergen and Paris in the 60s. I wanted to shorten the process from writing to publishing and learn everything about publishing, so I started up a publishing company called Bergen Bokbryggeri, which means “Bergen Book Brewery”. I learned how to design a book professionally and got it published and sold well enough to make a nice profit. It also got me into publishing and I have had the pleasure of helping several other writers publish their books. I run the publishing company in such a way that I help the authors get the best deals for printing their book and get good deals in design. Every penny the book sells for goes directly back to the author. This is an important project for me, because I believe that everyone who has a story to tell should be able to get it out into the world.

What is it like to work in the Norwegian television industry?

I have been working at TV 2, Norway’s largest commercial TV station for 15 years. I’m currently working in the Master Control Room. I enjoy this very much. Although filmmaking and publishing take a lot of my time, I am very happy being part of such a great working atmosphere.

What can you tell us about your latest film, Jacob and the Quisling?

In August my latest shortfall will be finished in post and ready to send to festivals around the world. It is a film I am very proud of. Again I have had the luck of having every actor we wanted coming onboard. The team behind the camera was stellar, and I am excited to show everyone what we have made. Its called “Jacob and The Quisling”. It’s a story about a young boy who befriends a quisling on death row. I’m so very happy that my producer has been so patient and stayed with the project through all the years it has taken to get it fully funded. The budget is about $200,000 dollars.

Do you have any feature films in the works?

I have several feature films that are written and ready to go. I feel with the experience of my short films and other projects the timing to move to features is right now. I have a spec script right now. The concept is like Good Will Hunting meets WarGames. It’s a story about a young genius who discovers the mathematical formula to foresee every random event. I have a ‘one location’ feature about a bunch of young men trying to move across borders hidden in a container on a ship, and the ship goes down. I’m also just finishing a drama/thriller about a family being torn apart when their young boy is trapped at home while someone breaks into their house. No, it has nothing to do with Home Alone!

All these films are mid-budget projects and I’m hopeful to get these up and running.

Of course I would love to direct someone else’s script as well. Having done the Røst film, Mordir Actum, where I directed someone else’s story, was such a great experience and something I am definitely looking forward to doing.

I’m also developing some really exciting episodic projects with Sigurd Sele who is starring in two of my upcoming films. Though it’s too early to disclose any details. I also, especially want to mention how grateful I am to my wife for being by my side all of these years. She’s been so amazing. Filmmaking takes a lot of time and can put a lot of strain on any relationship.

You can expect to hear the name of Anders Teig in movie theaters around the world. This Viking ship has just set sail.

Filmquest founder and director, Jonathan Martin is a seasoned writer, filmmaker, and visionary. Martin’s films have won over 170 festival and industry awards since 2011. His first short film “Evening with My Comatose Mother”, became the most awarded horror short film of all time.

His charismatic, nonchalant, and down to earth style distinguish him from most of the Hollywood personas. His authenticity and non-stop humor resonate with both industry and fan attendees alike. Martin personally oversees each feature screening and facilitates the Q and A at it’s close. His personal style leaves each filmmaker feeling a sense of appreciation and accomplishment whether they win an award or not. His endless humor keeps each audience laughing and he doesn’t miss a single nuance of each screening. He truly cares about each filmmaker, individually, and insures that they have an enjoyable experience. During our interview Martin received a phone call from a filmmaker who was lost at the airport. Martin stopped the interview until he made sure the filmmaker was safely en route before resuming our discussion.

Part of his long-term vision for the festival is to become an Oscar qualifying film festival. “That means if a film wins at our festival, it is short-listed for Oscar consideration”.
The Mythology of Passion
By Anthony Phan

My eyes were fixed upon the stars. I never had opportunity or inclination to become a mariner in my life but it felt like the ghosts of Vikings long dead were guiding me from above that night. It could have been magic. It could have been karma. More than likely my feelings owed a lot of their existence to the fact that at my side was a living Viking legend.
“A music festival…” he said grandiosely and unexpectedly.
The memory I have of the exact words that followed are spotty at best. What remains with me was the mythology of his passion. It was spoken with a tongue that only magi, shamans, oracles, and clairvoyants possess. He chose a music festival as the subject of his prophecy. The words swirled like incense in the cramped air of my 1998 Honda Civic. This utterance was a boon. My antiperspirant was starting to fail and a worthy conversation masked a fair amount of my mounting B.O. with subtle distraction.

I turned the conversation back on him, all the while staring into the infinite firmament of stars. I was careful not to become too lost in them or in his conversation–after all, I was driving down the highway at ten miles over the posted limits. The mariner warrior within me from some life previous couldn’t help but stare into the galaxy every now and again. It was like ogling a cosmic bombshell in the sky. I would do better to look away, but I simply couldn’t resist the powerful draw. Perhaps I should have paid closer attention to the details of the conversation that night. I don’t really mean this, though I just threw it out there as a rhetorical courtesy. What I’m really driving at is that when it comes down to it, no one cares a whit about details. I know punctilious detail-oriented folk are already dipping torches in flammable goo so as to get all riled up in my business but if these people will just hang on for half a second they will see that they actually don’t care about all those finicky details that they cram into their heads. Rather than caring about the details per se, they care about how those details make them feel.

To apply it to a running analogy, no one cares about what Nordic mariners did hundreds of years ago. They want to feel like Vikings in some respect for themselves right now.
So this is the mythology of passion. The DIY artist has to have it or die. This is what sits undisturbed in the firmament of destiny and beckons anyone who wants to be a Viking. Now, I’m not saying that you have to be a Viking. As far as I understand it, plundering, raping, burning, and terrorizing don’t really open many doors in networking and business circles–unless your some sort of cable TV provider. What I am saying is that maybe the stars make you feel like a wizard with a scar shaped like a rain cloud on your left butt cheek. Or maybe the stars make you feel like an orphaned rhinoceros that has to come back and oust the dictator hippopotamus that killed your father in some fictitious ostrich stampede. Whatever it is, your stars speak to you in a personal mythos.
They make you willing to cross an ocean of doubt, throw caution to the wind, and hedge your entire destiny on the possibility of something better being out there than what you leave behind on the mainland of your old life.
As an artist, you won’t survive without this mythology. Details will forever keep you on the shore. But mythology will launch you into the abyss and see you to greener lands (and no, not Greenland: an actual green place with fruit and stuff).
So on that starry night, as I rode with my Viking passenger and listened to him speak of his music festival, I ate up his personal mythology. It was oozing with passion, dripping with desire, sweating with ardent fervor–enough to make me sound dirty now describing it. I loved every minute of that dialogue. His pivotal message aroused within me deep yearnings of my unconscious psyche. In short, the Viking infected me. He infected me with the communicable disease of excitement. Oh yeah, if Mom is reading this, not to worry. His is just innocuous metaphor. I don’t need to get tested or anything.

As we discussed the mythology of the music festival, the Viking, my 1998 Honda Civic, and my excitement-infected butt booked it to our quadruple date with Destiny. Now Destiny’s actually a really cool lady! A lot of people are unnecessarily afraid of her. I mean, I suppose that this is not without cause–she really should reconsider a lot of those angry looking profile pictures on her Facebook account–but when you get to know her, you come to see that she gives you exactly what you want. If you want details, you get details; if you want experiences, you get experiences.

I’m not going to get all didactic and talk about the roots of words and break it all down like a schoolteacher to explain details v. experiences. What I am going to do is speak unofficially–off the record, as it were. And this is actually the greatest beauty about mythology: mythology’s absolutely unofficial, off the record. It doesn’t talk of things necessarily as they are or should be. It talks about things as maybes, possiblies, and perhapses. Artists require all these in abundant supply.
So does this that mean in the courtroom of opinion mythology holds no probative merit or use at all? Who forgets mythology? It’ll be around forever. Sure, it may change forms and get a new facelift every few millennia; but basically, it all stays the same deep down. Why? Because nobody cares about the details–they care about the way that those details make them feel. Mythology is the language of feelings. It’s the language of creation and exploration.

Humans need the feelings they get from their mythology just like they need B12, vitamin C, and Miles Davis. Mythological feelings are what break down indigestible details into nutritious and yummy experiences. Nobody opts for the DIY life because she or he really wants to fill the rest of her or his life with the mind-numbing details that are found in managing a successful artistic image, handling the bills, touring, dealing with shady promoters, et cetera ceteraque. Details will make you sick and artistically malnourished. But experiences? The mythos stuff? That’s what makes it all worth it. The reason that the DIY route really appeals to the folk with eyes on the stars is that it speaks to their mythology of passion. It makes them feel and allows them the space to interpret their feelings how they’d like. If we’re all honest, that’s what we artists want to do for the people that choose to consume our art.

So do you as the artist follow the stars of passion or the details of highway lane markers? Well, actually both–assuming that you don’t want to die a mangled death (I do hear that Valhalla’s actually pretty cool). But all horrendously morbid joking aside, if I would’ve exclusively focused on the Viking that night in my post-gig car, I would’ve gotten all wrapped up in the stars and would’ve driven right into a concrete barrier. Likewise, if I would have been focused exclusively on the highway markers, I would’ve gotten all wrapped up in fuel economy and responsible driving and would’ve driven right into a dead-end life. Both–if they are independent from the other and devoid of counterbalance–equal death. I can’t speak for everyone out there, but I personally would rather lose my life to a fiery accident than to a boring cubicle. But figuring out a proper balance so as not to die either way is actually a lot hipper alternative. So after all this blathering nonsense what am I driving at? Hopefully not a USDOT-rated retaining wall. Basically, it’s a given that the mythology of passion has to be ever in your mind as the DIY artist. If you really don’t have the fire within, the details of that life will become way too complicated to support the lifestyle. At the same time, if all you have is the mythos and no boat, you’re just a really gung-ho Viking chilling on some frigid, rocky beach that smells like rotting narwhal, waiting for a magic vessel to convey you to the fantasy land of your dreams. That ship will eventually sail in, but you won’t like it, it’s the SS Regrets.
Be a smart Viking. Get a boat, get a crew. Sharpen axes and stuff if you feel that you need that in your life. Get your mental, physical, musical, and financial equipment all around you…and then forget about it. I mean, don’t do something so lamentably boneheaded as to leave it on the shore as you sail off to Unpreparedville. What I mean is don’t let be that the exclusive thing that impels you across the kraken-filled deep. Let mythology do the heavy lifting. In the end it’s all mythology, baby.

Look to your stars, count on your resources. Details will inevitably make you turn back. Details will always kill your desire. Details will unavoidably turn every artistic decision into a buffet filled with endless chafing dishes of lukewarm anxiety. You’ll eat it and barf. But your mythology–as far-fetched, weird, and as reminiscent of British sci-fi as it may be–is enough to carry you across the deep, provided that your smart about it.
Now I’m not 100% sure on the details of how all this works. But if I were, wouldn’t that contradict everything that I’ve just said? Ultimately, regardless if I am talking out my Asgard or not right now, this is the great lesson I took away from my Viking shaman that night so long ago. If you dig it, cool. If not, go find your own mythos. If you let your mythology guide you like stars overhead eventually with some luck you should meet me, the Viking, Destiny, and my 1998 Honda Civic on the green shore. Safe travels.

My life began in Zagreb, Croatia in 1964. I lived in a small town outside the city with my grandparents. It didn’t take long to discover the beautiful gift that God had given me. At the age of five I would sing along to the radio as loud as I possibly could. Until the age of six my older brother John and I lived with our grandparents. At that time my parents were in America trying to find a home. In 1970 they returned to Croatia and took us to America to live with them. We lived in Scarsdale, New York in an apartment upstairs from a doctor’s office. My dad worked across the street wiring the electricity for a new hospital. My brother and I played outside in the front yard while he checked up on us from the hospital windows while he worked. When I was seven, we moved to Greenwich, Connecticut into the ugliest house on the street.

Shortly after our arrival my brother John decided to learn to play guitar. I was right next to him, belting out all that I had inside of me. We played country music because that was the music my father liked. We were convinced everyone in America listened only to country music. We became pretty good. It wasn’t long until my father started to bring us around to perform at all of the Polish, Jewish, and Veterans clubs that he could find.

Soon after high school I attended college to major in mechanical engineering. I was in my second year of college sitting at my drawing table when it dawned on me, “What the fuck am I doing? I’m meant to be a singer”! With that, I picked up my books and threw them out of my second story window. I was then able to give all my attention to the music and the band. After completing a five song demo, Jimmy, my friend John, and I set out to Los Angeles to find a record deal. We had no contacts, nor did we have any idea what the procedure was for getting signed. I was going on pure faith.

Within a month we had a new manager and a record deal with MCA. We recorded our debut record, “STEELHEART”. The album sold over 1 million copies followed by a world tour. We then went on to record our second album, “Tangled In Reins”. After successful tours of Asia and Europe in 1992, the band flew home to tour the U.S. opening for “Great White”. On the last leg of the tour we were invited to perform one last show as the opening act for “Slaughter” at McNichols arena in Denver, Colorado on Halloween night. That night was the beginning of a long spiritual journey for me. While performing the song “Dancing in the Fire”, I climbed a lighting truss. It was improperly secured. I tried to evade the falling rig, but it struck me on the back of my head. It crushed me to the stage, face first. I broke my nose, cheekbone, jaw, twisted my spine and needed 28 stitches in the back of my head. I do not know how or where my strength came from but I stood up in front of 13,000 people and walked off the stage. I was rushed to the hospital and my manager put me on a plane the next day. Not only should I have died that night when the 1000-pound rig smashed me to the floor, but my brain should have exploded from being 30,000 feet up in the air. It wasn’t until I got home that the real pain began. For months the pain was so excruciating that the slightest movement of my head was maddening. “Steeheart” was over.

I lost a lot of precious memory and found myself in a continuous daze for three years after the accident. I would sometimes find myself driving in the middle of the night two hours away from my home and not realizing where I was or what I was doing. I was in a dream but no one else could see or understand it. The kept telling me, “you’re fine”. After two years I finally met a neurophysiologist who explained to me that I had “TBI”, Traumatic Brain Injury. It then took two more years of continuous concentration and focus to relearn and reprogram my mind. Throughout this struggle I was never reimbursed nor granted any financial compensation. I had lost my family, my home, and my money, but I had found myself.

In 1995, I put together a band which consisted of Kenny Kanowski, Vincent Melle, and Alex Macarovich. We recorded an album in England called “Wait”. It was the most difficult album to make. I was still somewhat in a daze during the recording. We called the album “Wait, because it took so damn long to win my freedom from the record company as well as from my manager, who was taking more than what belonged to him. After paying a large sum of money to both of them I was finally able to move on with my career and release the record two years later.

Out of nowhere something came through me and jolted my soul. I looked over to my producer, Kit Woolen, and he asked me what was wrong. I could only reply with, “I just woke up”.
In 1997 went on a promotional tour of Asia in support of the album “Wait”. We performed twenty eight shows in thirty two days, in thirteen different countries. The tour mad a powerful impact with the title song, “Wait” reaching number 1 throughout Asia. We later proceeded back to Korea to perform two more shows at the Olympic stadium in Seoul, and at Kojo hall in Pusan. The tour was a great success. However the album never reached America or Europe because of the legalities. Now, after years later, I am proud to say that I have started my own record label called StillHard Records. The album “Wait” available to you here at steelheart.com.

I became the voice for Mark Wahlberg. I sang eight songs for the movie, one of which was “We All Die Young”, from the album “Wait.
Unfortunately, I was alone through the dark times after my accident. I was bed ridden for months and in a daze for years.

I tried to reach out to my family, friends but they couldn’t see my reality clearly. My brother would say, he’s fine, just a Rock Star burnt from the touring and and a little knock on his head. I lost a lot of memory and time. I had to search to find me again and rebuild myself. This was a journey which I cannot describe in one paragraph. The one consistent thread I had through my life and during these times were what I call my spirits. Always with me and always speaking to me, guiding me. If I only listened to them more, I would probably be further ahead.

For the longest time it seemed as if I would take one step forward and three steps back. It was a challenge to walk through life being in a constant daze. Nevertheless I always kept my faith and my belief in me. I lost everything but I was alive! Sadly not long after, my mother passed away and my brother passed 8 months later, both from Leukemia. In my deepest darkest sorrow I found happiness and wrote the most positive song called “ Good 2B Alive”. Even though this journey has been difficult it has shown me so much beauty, love, vision, patience and understanding. I am lucky to be alive.

One is a feature – Documentary film on my life. Keeping my faith and not giving up even though my world had crumbled. Directed By: Dana Altman.

We also have another Documentary film “Through Worlds Of Star Dust”. We filmed the making of my latest album. This documentary shows what it takes to record an album in todays world from the beginning to the end. The ups the downs and the unexpected.
